    Blepharitis

    What is Blepharitis??

    Blepharitis is an eye disorder that develops when bacteria thrive on the skin at the base of your eyelashes. Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the eyelids in people with more oily skin, dandruff or dry eyes. At Menger Eye Centre, Dr. Peter Menger and his team provide effective treatment to manage the symptoms of blepharitis.

    Symptoms and causes of Blepharitis

    Severity of blepharitis symptoms vary from person to person with common symptoms being;

    • Swollen eyelids
    • Red, itchy and irritation
    • Burning and stinging sensation
    • Flakes on eyelashes
    • ‘Sandy’ or ‘crusty’ feeling

    Bacteria is on the surface of everyone’s skin, however, in some people the bacteria thrive on the base of the eyelashes causing irritation due to over activity in the oil glands. As a result, dandruff like flakes begin to form along the eyelashes leading to blepharitis.

    Treatment for Blepharitis at Menger Eye Centre

    Like with every eye disorder, to diagnose blepharitis and provide effective treatment, at Menger Eye Centre, we perform a detailed examination of the eyelids and eyes followed by a swab test to determine the presence of any bacteria, fungi or allergy thriving on the eyelids. If a diagnosis of blepharitis is given, Dr. Peter Menger offers treatment plans to manage and control the symptoms of blepharitis. Treatments include;

    • Medications; these include antibiotics and cortisone in drop or ointment form to provide instant relief of symptoms with the shortcomings of such drugs discussed with the patients before.
    • Eyedrops; artificial tears or steroid eyedrops may be prescribed to reduce redness and swelling and to help the oil glands function better.
    • Warm Compresses;this assists in preventing stickiness from the flakes around the eyelashes while also assisting in keeping the oil glands from clogging.
    • Daily skin and hygiene practice;in order to manage blepharitis, practicing a good hygiene routine is crucial. This includes, gently scrubbing the base of your eyelashes, either with a warm washcloth or cotton swab (Q-tip).

    At Menger Eye Centre, we are committed in providing comprehensive care and management services of eye disorders to our patients and highly emphasis on practicing good hygiene for your eyes and skin since this plays a major role in attaining good health.
